300 years after its foundation, the Dorotheum, established in 1707 by Emperor Joseph I, is the largest auction house in Central Europe, the largest in the German-speaking area, as well as one of the leading auctioneers worldwide. The Dorotheum hosts about 600 auctions a year, and more than 100 specialists attend to over 40 departments.
Tradition, our specialists’ expertise and market experience, personal service, a broad selection, and international outlook – this is what our clients appreciate about the Dorotheum.
We organize daily sales in Vienna and 4 weeks of international sales: in April and October we have the main sales of Old Master paintings, 19th Century paintings, antique furniture, glassware and china, silverware, sculptures and jewelry. Both in May and November we hold sales of Modern and Contemporary Art, Design, art nouveau, silverware, jewelry and watches. It is during these four weeks of international sales that potential buyers get the opportunity to admire some of the works of art that will be for sale in exhibitions in our representations, spread all over Europe, including Brussels. Our guests get the chance to interact with our experts and see the quality and preservation of objects up close.
The Brussels representation works as an intermediary for consigners who want to sell or have works of art appraised. Our experts are in Brussels on a regular basis to make estimates during our days of expertise. These appraisals can also be made long distance, working with pictures for those who cannot be present during these days. We also function as a go-between for people who want to buy paintings, furniture or any other collector’s item from the main house in Vienna.
